Improving communication and teamwork within trans national teams working in different locations

The increasing trend towards network-organizations brings to work together teams that, in spite of sitting in different locations, have to keep up cohesion and common purpose to act effectively as part of the same working unit.

These teams interact primarily through supports – video or phone conference calls as well as e-mail – which are excellent from a technical point of view, but not always so effective as far as the relational side of the interaction is concerned.

In the case of trans national teams the cultural differences add to the physical distance to make the situation even more complex.

An important multinational company has come to us to get help in re-vitalizing team spirit within a trans national team playing a high value role in their supply chain.

We have developed and delivered for them a three steps programme:
  1. Assessment, via one-to-one interviews, of the individual perception of team spirit as experienced by the members of the team in question;
  2. Outdoor high-ropes training to  recall the skills and the abilities required to work as a team and, in doing that, to identify actions to improve their team effectiveness;
  3. Coaching during the implementation of the key agreed actions.

Better and more productive relationships amongst team members in their daily interaction has been only one of the immediate positive effects of the programme.
